1978年成立于曼彻斯特的Factory Records绝对是摇滚乐历史上不可忽视的一个独立厂牌.他们采用比较固定的创作团队,使得厂牌整体的音乐和包装风格比较统一,自成一色.
这张合辑完整的呈现了Factory Record的沿革故事, 也就是說这是一段有关于声音多过歌曲本身的故事, 专注于少有的不受时代变革影响的风格. Factory Record的贡献或许在于简单的从那些最优秀艺术家的最好专辑中获取更好的欣赏经验. 还有那些从逝者中衍生出来的新生代, 如从OMD到James,再到The Railway Children.
这四张专辑主题上各有不同.第一张Tears In Their Eyes记录了厂牌的早期岁月, 以Joy Division的"Transmission"和OMD的"Electricity"开场, 回想起来,对于Factory旗下乐队来说, 技术早已是基本的必备条件. 这意味着对于某些工业标准特质的感受力是欣赏整个Palatine(Palatine路,即Factory Record的地址)系列合辑的必备条件. 否则, A Certain Ratio的"All Night Party"和Flight,Section 25的几首歌曲,Stockholm Monsters则毫无诱人之处,甚至还会对Joy Division的杰作"Live Will Tear Us Apart", Durutti Column温暖人心的"Sketch For Summer"和James的"Folklore"中传达的情绪产生错误的猜想.
舞曲专辑 Life’s a Beach,则没有显得那么传统. A Certain Ratio的"Shack Up"中融入了Industrial funk和Fun mode的元素,与此同时Kalima的"Sparkle"和Quando Quango的"Genius"则极力在英伦的调调中加入Salsa元素. 然而他们仍然继续着像New order的"The Beach", Cabaret Voltaire的"Yashar"和Happy Monday的"Chic-ugly 24 Hour Party People"这样的大爱.
下一阶段的The Beat Groups中, 除了Durutti Column让人眼前一亮的Les Paul式的"Otis". 还有The Distraction点缀着躁动而刺耳吉他声的 "Time Goes By So Slow", The Railway Children的"Brighter"和James的"Hymn From A Village"(歌词中唱道: Be a songsmith crook / Study depth in style)以外.阴暗元素, 重型的吉他音色过于频繁的使用和贝司单调的音色成为贯穿整张合辑的特点, 这更加突出了厂牌阴郁的特质.
最后, 近期的Selling Out专辑更多的收集了Factory为排行榜打造的歌曲,少了听觉上的刺激. 如果这樣的纯POP专辑只是作为特例而出版, 让电音稍作喘息, 那New order的"True Faith"和Happy Monday的"Step On(the Oakenfold/Osbourn remix)"则让人觉得简直是突破. Northside和"Cath Carroll"即使不被称作传奇也获得了广大好评.(编译:Blurred)
