Marvin Gaye(1939-1984)的一生充满传奇，出生在一个严厉的基督教家庭，父亲担任神职人员，3岁便在教堂的诗歌班里担任独唱的重职，由于父亲生性保守，Marvin Gaye从小在教鞭下长大，高中毕业后加入美国空军，退伍后回到老家华盛顿，在当地一些doo wop乐团担任主唱，在Bo Diddley的赏赐下，于1950后期发行单曲，开始在美国巡回表演，1961年当他们到底特律时，被Berry Gordy相中，将他签到自己旗下的唱片公司Motown–史上最传奇的黑人音乐厂牌。
受到Sam Cooke的影响，日后Marvin Gaye(本名是Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr。)也将自己的名字字尾加上“e”，成为自己的艺名。
Marvin Gaye在Motown遇到Smokey Robinson，他们一起工作，后来与Berry Gordy的姊妹Anna相识并且结婚。Marvin Gaye在Motown发行许多专辑，创造自己音乐生涯的最高峰，也是Motown旗下最重要的艺人之一。
What's Going On 与1973年发行的另一张专辑Let's Get It On几乎是Marvin Gaye最重要的两张专辑，不过却有着不同的风格，What's Going On偏向于时事，社会与政治层面，Let's Get It On却倾向于情感的抒发。伴随这2张唱片的成功，Marvin Gaye的名声如日中天，到达事业的顶峰！
讽刺的是，他却开始沉溺于吸食古柯碱，其结果造成两任婚姻的失败，吸食毒品所费不赀，加上离婚官司，和Motown解约与唱片的税金，1981年他逃避到欧洲，后来又搬回老家与父母同住。然而情况却未好转，1984年4月1日，就在Marvin Gaye 45岁生日的前一天，因为吸食古柯碱的老问题与父亲发生激烈争吵，冲突之下竟遭到父亲开枪，终结了他充满传奇的一生，令人扼脕。
歌曲简介：
1971年Marvin Gaye在Motown发行流行音乐史上最重要的专辑之一What's Going On，这张专辑在发行前曾遭到Berry Gordy阻挠，原因是专辑内容针对美国药物泛滥，政治腐败，还有政府对越战的处理方式摇摆不定表达看法，这与当时只着重于男欢女爱的R&B音乐有很大的出入。
后来还是证明这张唱片禁得起时间考验，滚石杂志将这张唱片列为史上最重要500张专辑的第6名，仅次于Beatles，Bob Dylan与The Beach Boys，却是所有黑人音乐专辑中名次最高的，当他唱着“What's Going On”时，其真挚深情的声音，令人为之动容，生活在纷纷扰扰的社会环境下，我们需要时常内省，自己能带给这个环境什么？而什么又才是我们真正需要的？
